Biogas Certificates
Biogas is a renewable, low carbon-footprint energy source generated from the breakdown of organic matter such as agricultural waste, manure, municipal waste, and plant material.
Renewable alternative to conventional gas as it comes from decomposing waste.
Within a gas grid, one cannot distinguish biogas from natural gas. Thus, similarly as for renewable electricity, certificates are the instrument to trace and determine your consumption. Using biogas does emit carbon, however, this carbon was first captured in the form of methane and used as renewable energy source, or would have been emitted anyway, as it comes from waste. The environmental impact of methane is higher then carbon.
For the same reasons that you, your consumers, investors or employees, would want you to consume, and thus support renewable electricity, you can choose to consume biogas by buying certificates to cover your consumption. This will effectively lower your scope 2 emissions according to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.
How we can help
The biogas market is still highly disconnected and lacks standardization in comparison to the renewable electricity markets. GO2 Markets has the knowledge to help you explore your possibilities and the network to source biogas according to your needs.
